DO YOU KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE ?
KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE
All skin types can benefit from daily skin care routines like exfoliating and moisturizing, but different skin types have different needs—which is why ascertaining your skin type is an important first step in knowing how to treat your skin, what products to use, and how to Have Perfect Skin.
But the big question here is how do you know what type of skin you have?
THE 5 TYPES OF SKIN
In the aspect of cosmetology the skin is classified into five according to several factors related to its balance: hydration and sensitivity, sebaceous secretion.
NOTE: The last one mentioned (sensitive skin) is often not regarded as a skin type.
Each skin type is diverse and will have its own characteristics and different care requirements. Skin types are most times determined by genetics, although it will also be affected by other factors and can change overtime.
NORMAL SKIN
This is balanced—feeling neither dry nor oily. It is not prone to breakouts, flakiness, feeling slick or tight. Pores are generally small, the skin's texture is smooth, and it is less likely to be prone to sensitivity or blemishes.
OILY SKIN
This type of skin produces an excess of sebum that causes the skin to appear shiny and feel greasy—especially throughout the T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin). If you have oily skin, you may be more likely to have enlarged pores, develop acne blemishes .Oily skin has a brighter appearance. It is frequent in adolescents and young people under 30 years old.
DRY SKIN
It is typically dull and may become rough, flaky or even scaly. It often feels tight or less elastic and may be prone to showing more visible lines. In addition, it may become itchy or irritated.
Dry skin signs and symptoms may vary depending on different factors such as age, health status or their cause. It is generally characterized by occurrence of desquamation, itching, redness and small cracks.
Cracked skin is usually observed in very dry skin and presents small cracks, which, in more serious cases, may be deeper and even bleed.
COMBINATION SKIN
It includes areas that are dry as well as oily—with the T-Zone commonly being oily, and the cheeks being either dry or normal.
SENSITIVE SKIN
It is often referred to as a skin type but it's not, you can have oily and sensitive skin, dry and sensitive skin or normal and sensitive skin. Regardless of which type of skin you have, if you have sensitive skin, it may be red, feel like it's burning, itching or dry,it's a very delicate type of skin. This type of skin often reacts to stimuli to which a normal skin will have no reaction.
It looses it's protective functions making it more vulnerable to external factors therefor increasing its possibility of having an infection or certain skin reaction. If your skin is sensitive, being able to discern what triggers your sensitivity is essential to enable you avoid those substances or products containing those substances.
This skin type needs more care to avert dryness and irritation on skin's surface.
Allergens that can cause skin reaction include:
Certain plants like poison ivy, stinging nettle
Nickel
Fragrances
Latex or Rubber
Colouring
Chemicals found in beauty products, creams and soap.
HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE AT HOME.
This might not be ultimate but where you have no skin testers or find it difficult to determine, this can help.
STEP 1
Wash Your Face. Wash with a gentle cleanser and pat dry. This cleans away oils and dirt that may have accumulated during your day, giving your skin a fresh start. Do not over wash please.
STEP 2
Wait about 30min. During this time, your skin should return to its natural state, the characteristics of which will determine your skin type. Act normally and, please, don't touch your face.
STEP 3
Dab your face with a soft tissue. Pay attention to the 'T-zone'--the area of your forehead and nose, dab cheeks too and check the tissue.
STEP 4
Look out for these on your skin
Skin falls into four types--
Normal, Oily, Dry and Combination
*Normal skin shows neither oil nor flaking skin. It should feel supple and smooth. If you have it, consider yourself lucky.
*Oily skin is characterized by the grease on the tissue. It is also common for a person with oily skin to have large pores and a shine all over face.
*Dry skin may feel tight or show flakes of dead skin. It is associated with small pores. Moisturizing is important for this skin type.
*Combination skin is most common. It exhibits traits of all three of the above skin types.
Usually, the skin is oily in the T-zone and normal to dry elsewhere.
For clarification purposes sensitivity is not a skin type perse but a skin condition. So you can be oily and sensitive or dry and sensitive. Understand your skin and how it reacts or behaves and use items that suits it.
Simple daily routine you might want to consider.
Drink more water!
Your skin will produce more sebum (oil) if it's dehydrated to keep itself lubricated.
